Quatermain's Journal
The Benben Stone is one of ancient Egypt's most enduring symbols of creation, order and sacred origin.
In Egyptian belief, before the world was formed there were only the dark, endless waters of chaos. From those waters rose the first mound of land, known as the Benben. Upon this first place, the creator god Atum was said to have appeared, beginning the act of creation itself.
The Benben became closely associated with Heliopolis, the ancient centre of sun worship, and later influenced the form of pyramids, pyramidions and obelisks. Its pointed shape represented the meeting of earth and sky, matter and light, the physical and the divine.
The Mystery
The original Benben Stone has never been conclusively identified.
Some believe it may have been a sacred carved stone housed in the Temple of Ra at Heliopolis. Others have suggested it could have been a meteorite, fallen from the heavens and later wrapped in religious meaning. As with many ancient objects, certainty has been lost, while the symbol remains.
Whether relic, mythic marker or sacred technology of belief, the Benben survives as an idea: the first point of emergence from darkness into form.

The oldest mysteries often survive because certainty does not. The Benben Stone reminds us that history may lose the object, yet preserve the shape of its meaning for thousands of years.
