Quatermain's Journal
The Enigma Clock is an original Quatermain creation: a triangular mechanical curiosity built around nine numbers, hidden pathways and symbolic movement.
Although designed in the form of a clock, it does not follow the conventional twenty-four-hour system. Its nine positions describe a theoretical twenty-seven-hour day—a different interpretation of time governed by music, mathematics and geometry.
Within the triangular arrangement, unseen lines may be traced between the numbers, forming concealed energetic routes and symbolic structures. Some are obvious only after study. Others may remain hidden until discovered through another artifact.
The Mathematics of the Enigma
The Enigma Clock is governed by 432—the number traditionally associated with natural harmony and described in modern esoteric lore as the “frequency of love.” Its musical octave sequence halves through 216, 108 and 54, while every value returns to nine through its digit sum: 4 + 3 + 2 = 9, 2 + 1 + 6 = 9, 1 + 0 + 8 = 9 and 5 + 4 = 9.
Dividing the sequence by 27 reveals the descending values 16, 8, 4 and 2. The four original numbers total 810; doubled, they become 1,620—the exact number of minutes in a twenty-seven-hour day.
Across the clock's nine positions, this creates nine periods of three conventional hours. Each period contains 180 minutes or 10,800 seconds, embedding 108 within every passage of the Enigma Clock.
Its geometry follows the same design. Nine equal positions divide the circle into sectors of 40 degrees, while the interior angles of a nine-sided figure total 1,080 degrees. Within this arrangement, the vortex sequence 1–2–4–8–7–5 flows around the 3–6–9 axis.
Additional forms appear only when the numbers are traced in precise orders. The sequence 2–7–5–1–8–4 produces an Umbrella-like arrangement of three triangles, while the complete sequence 2–7–6–5–1–9–8–4–3 produces a form resembling the three diamonds of Mitsubishi. These are not arbitrary decorations, but geometries concealed within the numbered face. Music, time, number and geometry therefore become different expressions of a single mechanism.
The piece remains under development and may include moving mechanical parts in its finished form.
The Mystery
The Enigma Clock asks a simple question: what happens when time is no longer measured, but interpreted?
Its numbers are not merely decorative. Their placement invites the observer to search for relationships, sequences and hidden geometries beneath the surface.
